Cree and Ewo deliver LED high-mast lighting at Munich Airport

High-mast outdoor lighting applications are one area-lighting technology in which LEDs have struggled to find success with fixtures mounted at 100 ft or higher. Ewo, however, has installed its led street light fixture Manufacturer floodlights in such an application on the apron of the Munich Airport (FMG) after first trialing solid-state lighting (SSL) technology at the airport two years ago.
The airport installation turned to LEDs to both slash energy costs and to provide better quality lighting. The prior high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights rendered colors poorly, as is common with all HPS lights. Low CRI is not an issue in many outdoor applications, but the airport wanted lights that could boost safety.
"Assuring the safety of our passengers, planes and their crew, airport staff, and any other visitor is a priority at Munich Airport," said Günther Sellmeier, planning and project manager for exterior lighting and engineering and facilities at FMG. Ewo did not reveal the actual CRI of the lights, but the Cree XT-E LEDs used in the fixtures have a minimum CRI of 70 and are offered at higher CRIs. HPS lights have a typical CRI in the range of 25. The higher CRI makes it far easier for equipment operators to see workers and other obstacles.
The airport projects a minimum of 50% energy savings with the new lights. That will equate to an annual reduction of 122,000 kWh and a reduction of 70 tons of carbon emissions.
The project chronology shows how led street light wholesale are evolving and how long some SSL projects take to come to fruition. We first reported on the story in February 2012 when Ewo tested LED lights on two of the high-mast poles. Initially the lights delivered 46% energy savings. The final installation used newer Cree LEDs, and delivered better performance.
Slowly LEDs are catching on in high-mast applications. Last June we covered a freeway project in Maine in which Acuity supplied Holophane HMAO luminaires. At the time the Maine Department of Transportation said that the cost and weight of LED products had hampered the use of SSL in the application. Earlier, Cooper Lighting announced a high-mast project in Idaho.
Still, there are lighting professionals who think other light-source technologies may be most suitable for high-mast lighting. In an article on the 2012 Street and Area Lighting Conference over on our Illumination in Focus website, we covered a project at the Port of Oakland, California where Luxim LEP (light-emitting plasma) sources were determined the best match for a major retrofit of HPS fixtures.

Lattice Power gets cash infusion to support GaN-on-Si LED development

Lattice Power has regularly claimed that it has commercially launched gallium-nitride-on-silicon (GaN-on-Si)  cree xsp series led street light although solid-state lighting (SSL) products using such LEDs have been hard to find on the market. But the China- based company has received a significant cash infusion to pursue the Si substrate technology that could deliver much lower cost in the backend of the LED manufacturing process. Venture investors Asia Pacific Resources Development Investment, GSR Ventures, Mayfield Fund, and Crescent HydePark have led an investment round totaling $ 80 million.
The company said the new funding would be utilized to expand R & D and manufacturing operations and finance the expected growth in sales. The company cited the development of Si-based LEDs for mobile flash-photo applications in smartphones and tablets as one of the factors that lead to the new funding.
"LatticePower's commercial GaN-on-Silicon LED technology has provided us the opportunity to be on the leading edge of the green revolution and an overnight leader in the LED market: mobile, auto and general lighting," said Dr. Min Wang, CEO of LatticePower. "This new round of funding will allow us build the necessary scale to be competitive in this fast-evolving and growing market and enable the company to meet the growing demand for our industry-leading products from an expanding customer base across the globe. "
Lattice Power said back in 2012 that it was the first company in volume production of GaN-on-Si LEDs. But to date, there is no evidence in the general-lighting market that any of the Si-centric players have dented the commercial market .
Plessey recently added a metal-organic chemical-vapor deposition (MOCVD) reactor to presumably boost its manufacturing capacity. That company has sold Si-based LEDs in low volumes even through distribution. The company's most recent LED announcement was for a blue-pump LED that could be used in remote phosphor applications.
Toshiba is also pursuing Si-based led street light supplier using technology that was originally acquired from Bridgelux. The company announced its second-generation GaN-on-Si LEDs last October. The company also showed a flip-chip version of an Si-based LED at the Light + Building trade fair.
Clearly, however, the investors believe that Lattice Power, and what the company says is a portfolio of more than 200 global patents, will make an impact in LED lighting. In addition the company plans a global expansion. "The company will leverage its proprietary technology to build a global network of R & D teams, starting by integrating a Korean and Taiwanese team in 2014 and expanding to build a US R & D and manufacturing center by 2015, "said Sonny Wu, LatticePower executive chairman." LatticePower will revolutionize the lighting industry. "

Walmart plans major LED transition in supercenter lighting globally

Retailer Walmart has a goal to reduce the power it uses per square foot of floor space by 20% before the year 2020. Moving to reach the goal, the company has announced that it will install new led outdoor lighting wholesale in many of its largest supercenter stores across the US, Asia, the UK, and Latin America. GE Lighting will supply a variety of solid-state lighting (SSL) fixtures for the initiative, including the Lumination IS Series for the ceiling lighting that is the energy largest consumer in a supercenter store .
Indeed, Walmart said that the lighting for the main sales floor in a store accounts for 90% of the total energy used in the building. The retailer has already had relatively efficient fluorescent lighting in many stores, including state-of-the-art T5 fluorescent technology in some instances. Still, GE says the Lumination IS Series uses less energy than the best fluorescent products, and the savings from the transition will range from 15-60% based on the legacy lighting installed in stores in different regions.
Walmart and LEDs
"LEDs have become an integral part of our energy-efficiency model for our stores and play a key role in achieving our overall sustainability goals," said Doug McMillon, president and CEO of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. "Just as important, the energy cost savings coming from these innovations will help us maintain the low prices our customers depend on us to provide. "
GE and Walmart have a long history partnering on LED lighting projects with GE supplying LED-based freezer case lights to the retailer starting in 2005. Walmart was also a pioneer of LED use in parking lots, working with the US Department of Energy on a project back in 2009.
More recently, Walmart and GE worked together on LED lighting for the first all-LED-lit supercenter that opened last October in South Euclid, Ohio. That project validated the performance of the Lumination IS products for ceiling lighting. "We have worked to find and scale energy-efficient LED lighting solutions that are cost effective and high quality, and now working with GE, we're paving the way to make this a mainstream solution for the retail industry, "added McMillon.
GE formally introduced the Lumination IS Series this past January. The linear pendant design is intended to provide an indirect lighting effect for ambient needs by directing light from an LED commercial lighting wholesale engine into linear reflectors.
Roll-out plans
The installation of supercenter lighting will begin this month in the Asda-branded stores that Walmart operates in the US. The initial plans will include 10 new stores in the UK, 30 new stores in the US, 37 new stores in Mexico, 24 new stores and 16 store retrofit projects in China, 10 new stores in Central America, and 30 store retrofit projects in Brazil.
The US projects will serve as a baseline for energy efficiency due to the fact that the typical US Walmart supercenter has relatively efficient fluorescent lighting. Indeed, the partners project savings in the US to be in the 15% range. Still, the actual savings are a staggering 340,000 kWh annually per store, or $ 34,000 at $ 10.13 / kWh. In other regions the savings will fall in the 40-60% range. And all of the regions will benefit from maintenance savings.
"We've had a long and successful relationship with Walmart, increasing our environmental efforts together," said Jeff Immelt, GE chairman and CEO. "A leader in seeking energy efficiency in the retail industry, Walmart's energy-conscious focus allows the company to attain a substantial cost savings in electricity. We value our longstanding relationship with Walmart and are proud to work with them in reducing their environmental impact. "

Philips launches SlimStyle BR30 lamps with mid-power LEDs

Philips Lighting has announced the SlimStyle BR30 LED retrofit lamp that can deliver similar light output to a 65W incandescent bulb in flood-lighting applications. The new lamp uses Philips Lumileds mid-power LED panel lighting fixture to deliver 650 lm, and Philips has suggested a retail price of $ 12.97 for the lamp that certainly undercuts the current marketplace for such products.
Philips launches SlimStyle BR30 lamps with mid-power LEDs
Philips launched the A-19 SlimStyle omnidirectional lamp last December, also establishing an industry low price point at that time for a 60W-equivalent lamp. That product features a very visible design in which mid-power LEDs are placed around the outer circumference of a flat paddle-like structure. While the design looks quite a lot different from a conventional bulb, it delivers omnidirectional performance.
The challenge in a BR30 lamp is quite different in that the beam needs to be cast primarily in one direction. But Philips apparently has been able to use a similar light engine to the one developed for the A-19 lamp, albeit with LEDs mounted on only one side of the structure and radiating in a forward direction.
The resulting BR30 lamp looks more traditional from the front of the radiating surface. But as the nearby photo illustrates, the lamp does not rely on the traditional reflecting chamber. Indeed, the lamp neck is very narrow and there is no evident heat sink. As with the case of the A-19 lamp, the mid-power LEDs do not produce excessive heat and the light engine design conducts away the heat that is generated without the need for a bulky and evident heat sink.
The new BR30 lamp consumes just 9.5W, and Philips said that the product will save consumers $ 152 in energy costs over the life time of the product. The product is rated for 25,000 hours of use and what Philips says is 25 times the lifespan of legacy BR30 lamps. Of course, the savings and impact of long life will depend on application. Many BR30 lamps are used in applications such as downlights where the lamps get usage that matches or exceeds that of the typical A-lamp. Conversely, some flood lights are only sporadically used and rarely need replacement.
In any case, the LED panel lighting Manufacturer has truly come in at a price point that could change the market when Philips delivers the product in July. Cree, for example, launched an LED-based BR30 lamp mid-2013 with similar performance specifications. Retailer Home Depot is currently selling that product for $ 19.97.
"Over the last four years, Philips has led the charge in making LED bulbs more affordable for consumers, while ensuring that we continue to innovate with every new generation of offerings and the SlimStyle BR30 is no exception," said Bruno Biasiotta, CEO and president of Philips Lighting Americas. "We continue to demonstrate our commitment to giving consumers value-priced offerings, without compromising on the light quality or features they have come to expect. Moreover, we have one of the most robust rebate programs in the country and continue to work with utilities to ensure that we can further drive down the price and save consumers time and money. "
Philips said that the new BR30 lamp is designed to be Energy Star compliant, although certification will come down the road. Energy Star certification is key to many rebate programs. The SlimStyle A19 lamp received Energy Star certification in April, about four months after introduction.

Elation helps MTV ring in the New Year with EPV762 MH moving head video panels

MTV's star-studded New Years Eve celebration wowed tens of thousands of TV viewers with its high-profile celebrity hosts Snooki and JWoww from Jersey Shore and performances by Ke $ ha, Sean Kingston and Ne-Yo, among others. Broadcast from the Viacom studio at 1515 Broadway and featuring a sparkly dance club theme, "MTV's Club NYE 2013" delivered all the glitter and eye candy one might expect from a production overlooking Times Square on the biggest night of the year, thanks to a unique set design by AWB DESIGN LLC, based in the greater NYC area.

Production designer Anthony Bishop of cree xsp series led street light
created a stunning performance environment, while maintaining the camera-friendliness of the set, through the innovative use of Elation Professional's EPV762 MH moving head LED video panels, supplied by LMG (Nashville). Although the show had a look and feel of "bigness," the studio actually proved to be a very challenging space to work with due to its small size. Its grid height was a mere 11'6 ".

"When you stick six cameras in that studio and shoot it, it becomes all about the grid, and less about looking at where we would traditionally put scenery," said Bishop. The main issue was "how do I have something scenically there that's there when I need it, then goes away and does not interfere (with camera shots in the cramped space). "

Wanting to solve this issue and also create a spectacular club-themed design, Bishop called LMG's Technology Artist Ken Gay, with whom he had collaborated on MTV shows and other projects in the past. "I have always brought LMG to the table because of the respect I have for them. They're a how-can-we-get-the-job-done type of company. They've been around for awhile and have a vast amount of resources and product available to designers that gives us so much freedom. "

LMG recommended the Elation EPV76 MH, a 7.62mm high-resolution rotating LED video panel that has the capability to pan 540 ° and tilt 265 ° just like a moving head light fixture. Measuring a square 19.2 "x 19.2" and very lightweight (53 lbs.), the panels contain 3-in-1 RGB SMD LEDs, which produce 2,000-nit brightness. Each unit features Ethercon in / out for video signal, Powercon in / out for power linkage, and 3-pin and 5-pin DMX inputs for pan / tilt control.

The EPV762 MH panels' full rotating pan / tilt ability gave Bishop just what he was looking for, from both a spatial and design perspective. "When I've got a grid that's hanging down in camera shot or even polluting the upstage LED wall, I've got to be able either to complement it or not compete with it That's where the Elation panels came in as really viable option for us -. because of the rotating heads, "he explained When not contributing to the scenic design, the. panels could be flattened and essentially "rotated out of view."

Equally important, the Elation moving head units also provided the a whole range of creative design options for both Bishop and Lighting Designer Chris Landy -. A "must" for a show that featured five major acts "Of course every band had to have own look . The panels gave us this mobility. For most part we provided content as way to change the set. But we designed it in a way so that we could shoot it differently too. "

Bishop used a total of 22 EPV762 MH panels on the MTV set, and says he would have used more if he had not "run out of room." The panels were rigged as individual units in two basic configurations. "One we created a proscenium arch over the ceiling that could then flatten out and go away. The other way was as vertical columns, which is how I framed for camera the offshoot shots- the diagonal shots, when you're looking at the band on the stage. So when you get those really cool side shots of Ne-Yo singing, the Elation units are right there surrounding his head, used basically as a wing unit. "

With the panels in the proscenium arch, Bishop added, "I did not put them in straight row -. There's two left and right of center I worked with the director Brian Campbell who was shooting the show We had these dancer pods. - the dancers were on underlit decks, and I said, 'You gotta get in there with a steady camera and get those upper shots. I'm giving you all this candy.' Not only could we shoot the Elation units out in a wide shot , we could also make them go like a ceiling panel and get these nice tight upper shots of the dancers with content behind, and that makes good TV We could have a nice soft palette going on -. we could make it hard, or make it soft. "

In addition to the proscenium arch and vertical columns, led street light wholesale was one more way the EPV762 MH panels were used, which proved a real enhancement to the New Years Eve broadcast. On the studio's east side is a wall of windows that faces Times Square, explained Bishop. "We positioned one of the Elation units back side, where we were able to spin it out to the MTV platform in the middle of Times Square and have our show content and the MTV logo in it. This allowed us to get throwbacks from the middle of Times Square back up to the studio window.

"So there were actually three different things we were able to do with the panels. They were definitely a conversation piece," said Bishop. "I can not speak enough about the Elation units. Look what we were able to do with them in a small TV studio set. Then think about what you could do with these moving head units on a tour. From a touring standpoint, I'm definitely going to promote using these units. I have not even touched what I think I can do with them. "

GDS works new lighting technology into Hammersmith music venue renovation

There is perhaps one venue whose name is carved deeper than any other in the hearts of every self-respecting British music fan. Opened in 1932 and designed by Robert Cromie in Art Deco style as The Gaumont Palace cinema, it was renamed the Hammersmith Odeon in 1962, later the Hammersmith Apollo and now after an extensive refurbishment that has restored it to its former Art Deco glory, it will be known as the Eventim Apollo. For a certain generation, this Grade 2 listed building has and will always be known as Hammy O. Ziggy Stardust was killed off there, Motorhead would not sleep until they got there and it was there that Thin Lizzy recorded, some would say, much of the greatest live rock album of all time. No matter what age or genre, led high bay light manufacturers remains the ambition of musicians across the world to tread its boards and its future programme attests to the fact that this is a situation that is unlikely to change anytime soon. When GDS were commissioned to work on the refurbishment of the Apollo, it was nothing short of participating in the restoration of what thousands would consider a national monument.

The overall task was one of restoring this magnificent Art Deco building to its former glory. Over the years, the interior of the Apollo had become something of a jaded, dark space and as such, a shadow of its former self. The first phase of the refurbishment involved the front of house areas, including the hallways, staircases and bars.

GDS was invited to join the design team tasked with the restoration. The vision was to work within the fabric of the original 1932 Robert Cromie masterpiece and wherever possible restore the historical fixtures. A collection of historical photographs detailing the Apollo's early splendour provided a template from which to work.

Using the afore-mentioned photographs for reference, GDS managed the manufacture of the new light fittings as well as refurbishing the original 1932 chandeliers. The GDS team fitted new and original fittings with its new RGBW colour changing strip, designed to achieve an even coverage of light throughout, and running at up to 70W per Meter, it easily matched all compact fluorescent benchmarks that were given.

Created specifically for this job the new strip light carries a dedicated white cell (2700K) in order to provide the perfect colour temperature and is now a standard item in the ArcSystem range. In addition to the newly created strip lights, the installation also featured ArcSystem MR 16 fixtures across the foyer.

The installation used a whole DMX universe that exceeded the normal ARC system 64 channel capability. LumenRadio were glad to help by providing an integrated CRMX OEM solution that connected perfectly with the ARC system electronics.

Of critical importance to any refurbishment solution is the need for work to progress quickly and the Apollo was no exception. The work was completed in a nine week turnaround and delivered a complete transformation of the whole space.

GDS chose LumenRadio's CRMX technology on this prestigious project because it was essential to deliver a large number of DMX channels to certain fixtures which could not be cabled. Frame integrity as well as flawless data transfer was an absolute requirement for Hammersmith Apollo and this is one of the many performance areas where CRMX really excels.

"We have worked closely for a number of years with LumenRadio on some of our wireless product ranges. GDS recognises that the combination of reliable wireless, RDM feedback and top quality support offered by LumenRadio is of the highest order and consequently they were the obvious choice for this project. "

"GDS has been a great partner to us for many years, and led high bay light for sale is a joy to work with. We were of course delighted and very proud to work with GDS on this fantastic project. The Eventim Apollo demanded the highest standards and we are confident that LumenRadio perfectly met its requirements in contributing to the restoration of this iconic venue. "

As GDS celebrates its ninth year, the award winning UK manufacturer has become a truly global company, having established an international sales and distribution network in over 40 countries. With seven market-leading brands and a pioneering approach to bespoke projects, GDS continues to innovate . at the forefront of the entertainment, architectural, television and corporate markets From LiteWare, the original battery powered wireless LED up-lighter to the multi-award winning BluesSystem working lights; from CueSystem cue lights to ArcSystem auditorium lighting, GDS continue to create innovative , flexible solutions that have found their way from Broadway to the West End and from Cirque De Soleil to the Olympics.

Microsemi Unveils Revolutionary Driver for LED Street Light Fixtures

Microsemi Corporation unveiled a new LED driver designed specifically for North American street light installations. The efficient LXMG221D-0700040-D2F ™ LED driver eliminates bulky step-down transformers typically used in street light fixtures in these markets, providing a single-step conversion from 347VAC or 480VAC down to less than 57VDC as typically required by LED fixtures. This allows manufacturers to design lighter fixtures, which can lower product development and transportation costs. Unique features include integrated fault detection and management functionality which enable operators to respond more quickly to light fixture failures.
According to estimates from industry analyst firm Strategies Unlimited, the LED street and area lighting market in 2010 was $ 327 million. The market is expected to increase at a compound annual unit growth rate of approximately 26 percent from 2010 to 2015. North America, Europe and China lead in the deployment of LED lighting technology.
"The deployment of high-performance solid state lighting fixtures is accelerating and customers are beginning to benefit from the improved efficiency and longer lifetimes these products deliver," stated Roger Holliday, vice president of Marketing for Microsemi's Analog Mixed Signal Group. "Microsemi's leadership in power conversion and light management, combined with our analog mixed-signal design expertise and unique supply chain setup, is why fixture manufacturers globally are choosing us as their lighting solutions technology partner. "
"LED commercial lighting industry often represent one of the highest operating expenses for municipalities because of electricity, maintenance and replacement costs," said Irene Signorino, director of Marketing for Microsemi's Analog Mixed Signal Group. "LEDs help solve this issue by minimizing energy consumption and reducing replacement frequency. If dimming and thermal protection are supported in conjunction with the elimination of the step-down transformer losses as in our new driver, operating costs can be decreased even further. "
In Canada and in the United States, power is often distributed to an outdoor lighting fixture at 347V or 480V. The fixture must then convert the power to much lower voltages (often less than 60V in the US) to properly drive the LED. Until now , this conversion was accomplished using bulky and inefficient step-down transformers. Microsemi's LXMG221D-0700040-D2F eliminates the need for these transformers, accomplishing the voltage conversion in one step. In addition, since multiple power supplies can be used in a modular fashion, many models of street lights (40W, 80W and more) are supported.
Undetected and unreported non-functioning Europe led street light Manufacturer are a key issue for municipalities responsible for the illumination of public areas. Microsemi's new LED driver includes fault detection and management capabilities, which can allow operators to address this issue and respond more quickly to light fixture failures.

Latest Philips Lighting Technology Would Help Realise Aspirations for New Zealand Stadiums

Latest lighting technology would help realise aspirations for New Zealand stadiums Wellington, New Zealand – New Zealand stadiums have the opportunity to become world leaders in pitch lighting, with Philips’ release in New Zealand of LED floodlights as part of its ArenaVision range. “Sports lighting technology has developed considerably in recent years, with led street light with solar panel now able to provide the high lumen output required for high-definition broadcasting standards, while also providing control and flexibility to manage light spillage onto neighbouring roads and properties,” said Gordon Wiffen, General Manager of Philips Lighting New Zealand.

The new ArenaVision LED range provides high quality light output and greater control capabilities than standard metal halide floodlights. ArenaVision LED floodlights also use up to 34.7 percent less energy than ArenaVision metal halide floodlights, while the inherently longer lifetime of LED reduces maintenance with longer periods between lamp changes. Typically, metal halide floodlighting lamps should be replaced every three-seasons to maintain the lighting levels required, whereas the Philips LED system is expected to last in excess of 10 seasons.

ArenaVision LED technology allows a quick re-start compared to the warm-up time of Philips metal halide floodlights, making it faster to continue events in an unforeseen power outage, or switch between optimal lighting configurations for specific sports. The ArenaVision LED control system can also be used to create entertainment lighting effects that would normally require dedicated stage-lighting luminaires. At the push of a button, the user can switch between fixed lighting configurations that fulfil sports codes’ requirements, and pre-programed special lighting effects.

“Lighting is critical for sports venues, not only to give the high definition needed for both players and broadcasters, but also to enhance the sense of spectacle, anticipation and emotion that comes with competitive sports, including giving stadiums that extra ‘wow-factor’ through colourful light displays,” says Wiffen. Philips has already lit up a number of New Zealand sporting venues such as Eden Park, Nelson’s Trafalgar Park and Dunedin’s indoor Forsyth Barr Stadium with its high intensity discharge ArenaVision range. Philips ArenaVision has also lit up major stadiums around the world, such as Old Trafford Stadium, the Guangzhou Olympic Stadium and five of the football stadiums recently used in Brazil.

“With Philips’ ArenaVision led street lighting Manufacturer now successfully implemented in sports stadiums such as Ekinox at Bourg-en-Bresse, France and Chelsea Football Club’s Stamford Bridge, there is an opportunity for New Zealand stadiums to take advantage of the latest developments in lighting technology, which would benefit broadcasters, players, bill payers and spectators alike,” said Wiffen.
