Everlight announces 1W white LED, adds to IR and HIR LED families

The XI3535 LED in a low-cost plastic package targets general-illumination SSL applications, while Everlight also announces new IR products for remote controls and touch screens.

Everlight Electronics has announced the XI3535 1W white LED Panel light 18w omni-directional retrofit lamps, directional lighting, and other residential solid-state lighting (SSL) products. The 940-nm IR26-71C/61C LEDs target remote control applications and the 850-nm HIR83, HIR89, and HIR91 LEDs target proximity-sensing applications such as touch screens.
The new white LEDs are available across a CCT range from 2700K to 6500K. Everlight offers CRI greater than 80 for the entire family. The top-view LEDs have a 115 ° beam pattern.

Flux output is 105-100 lm for cool and warm white LEDs, respectively, at 350 mA of drive current. The efficacy ranges from 109-115 lm / W. The single-emitter LEDs have a nominal forward voltage of 3V. Everlight also offers two-emitter packages that operate from 6V and 150 mA of drive current.
IR and HIR LEDs
The infrared (IR) LED Panel light 36w include the HIR83, HIR89, and HIR91 that Everlight refers to as high-efficiency infrared (HIR), and the lower-power IR26-71C/61C, and in both bands you have the option of top-or side-view models.
Offering a viewing angle of 30 °, the top-view HIR89-01C produces 55 mW / sr of power at 70 mA of drive current. The top-view HIR91-01C/L297 delivers 40 mW / sr at 70 mA, and a beam angle of 40 °. For side-view applications, the HIR83-01B offers an asymmetric pattern 100 ° × 40 ° for applications such as touch screens and outputs 5 mW / sr at 20 mA.
The side-view IR26-71C and top-view IR26-61C are low profile LEDs that measure 1.2-mm high. The former has a 50 ° beam angle, and the latter a 20 ° beam angle. The LEDs output 8 mW / sr at 20 MA.

LED manufacturing research: RPI integrates features, studies address cost and efficiency

New RPI research proves the concept of integrating led street light fixture on the same chip with other electronic components such as transistors, while other new research focuses on maximizing the light extraction efficiency of LEDs and lowering cost through simpler materials.

Researchers at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center (ERC) have integrated a power transistor in gallium-nitride (GaN) layers along with an LED structure. An RPI doctoral student has also published research on a novel method that could improve the light extraction efficiency of LEDs. Researchers at the University of Washington hope to reduce the cost of slid-state lighting (SSL) products via a transition from phosphors based on rare-earth elements to electroluminescent silicon particles derived from sand.
Integrating circuit elements
The RPI research is focused on adding functionality to LED chips that can simplify the increasingly complex external electronics required to drive the LED. The laboratory project involved the monolithic integration of both a high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) and an LED on one chip . This simple first step of integration could provide a real benefit, eliminating the external MOSFET power transistor typically used to switch an LED on and off.

When asked whether the laboratory research would bring real value to the SSL space, T. Paul Chow, an engineering professor at RPI and the leader of the recent research, said, "Eliminating the MOSFET is the first step. We can add the gate driver circuitry, and then more integration to realize a power converter. "Chow also said a single HEMT could control multiple LEDs on one chip.
The project utilized a GaN substrate and realized an LED that matches the light density of standard GaN LEDs being manufactured in volume today. So presumably there is no performance impact of integrating more functionality.
The research team has big dreams and compares the development with the evolution of transistors to dense ICs in the silicon semiconductor world. In fact, Chow calls the new type of device a light-emitting integrated circuit (LEIC).
"This new study, and the device we have created, is just the tip of the iceberg," said Smart Lighting ERC director Robert Karlicek, a co-author of the study and RPI professor. "LEICs will result in even higher energy efficiency of . LED lighting systems But what will be even more exciting are the new devices, new applications, and new breakthroughs enabled by LEICs -. they will truly usher in the era of smart lighting "
The implication is LEDs that might have complex integrated functions ranging from sensors to perhaps communication capabilities or even low-end microprocessors. Chow added, "We can also integrate some sensors, and eventually a network. However, how much one will do in GaN and how much in silicon nanometer-scaled CMOS is subject to discussions, system or IC partition choices, and sometimes debate. "
Silicon ICs are so much lower in cost relative to circuit real estate that GaN-based functions will likely remain focused on power-conversion circuitry and sensors. The study entitled "Monolithic integration of light-emitting diodes and power metal-oxide semiconductor channel high- electron-mobility transistors for light-emitting power integrated circuits in GaN on sapphire substrate "has been published in the scientific journal Applied Physics Letters.
Increasing extraction efficiency
Separately, an RPI student is behind an approach to increase the brightness of GaN LEDs by minimizing the photons that are trapped within the device. Notice of the research entitled "Graded-refractive-index (GRIN) structure for brighter and smarter light-emitting diodes "came to light back in February when RPI announced that doctoral student Ming Ma was a finalist for the Lemelson-Rensselaer Student Prize. Subsequently, Ma was announced as the winner of the $ 30,000 award and has now published the research on the International Society for Optics and Photonics website.
The research focuses on the fact that the broad difference in refractive index between GaN and air results in total internal reflection of light and extraction efficiency below 30%. The paper describes micro-pillars constructed of dielectric layers on top of the led street light fixture Manufacturer surface that layer -by-layer provide a gradual transition in refractive index. The study revealed light extraction as high as 70%.
Silicon nanoparticles
A startup called LumiSands, meanwhile, has emerged from the Center for Commercialization at the University of Washington in Seattle that hopes to replace rare-earth phosphors with silicon nanoparticles - both lowering the cost of LEDs and SSL products and improving the light spectrum.

Hopefully, manufacturers could substitute traditional rare-earth elements with our material with minimal additional steps, "said Ji Hoo, a doctoral student in electrical engineering and co-founder of LumiSands." It will be cheaper, better-quality lighting for users. " The researchers noted that rare-earth elements are expensive, dangerous to mine, and largely controlled by China.
The team has thus far demonstrated the conversion of blue LED light into red light using silicon particles that are smaller than 5 nm. They believe that they can develop yellow and green particles in short order. The combination of the three and blue LED emitters could deliver a spectrum near that of sunlight.

Honeywell launches LED Lighting Solutions business unit to serve North America

Cree and Ewo deliver LED high-mast lighting at Munich Airport

High-mast outdoor lighting applications are one area-lighting technology in which LEDs have struggled to find success with fixtures mounted at 100 ft or higher. Ewo, however, has installed its LED-based F32 floodlights in such an application on the apron of the Munich Airport (FMG) after first trialing solid-state lighting (SSL) technology at the airport two years ago.
The airport installation turned to led street light wholesale to both slash energy costs and to provide better quality lighting. The prior high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights rendered colors poorly, as is common with all HPS lights. Low CRI isn't an issue in many outdoor applications, but the airport wanted lights that could boost safety.
"Assuring the safety of our passengers, planes and their crew, airport staff, and any other visitor is a priority at Munich Airport," said Günther Sellmeier, planning and project manager for exterior lighting and engineering and facilities at FMG. Ewo didn't reveal the actual CRI of the lights, but the Cree XT-E LEDs used in the fixtures have a minimum CRI of 70 and are offered at higher CRIs. HPS lights have a typical CRI in the range of 25. The higher CRI makes it far easier for equipment operators to see workers and other obstacles.
The airport projects a minimum of 50% energy savings with the new lights. That will equate to an annual reduction of 122,000 kWh and a reduction of 70 tons of carbon emissions.
The project chronology shows how LEDs are evolving and how long some SSL projects take to come to fruition. We first reported on the story in February 2012 when Ewo tested LED lights on two of the high-mast poles. Initially the lights delivered 46% energy savings. The final installation used newer led street light supplier, and delivered better performance.
Slowly LEDs are catching on in high-mast applications. Last June we covered a freeway project in Maine in which Acuity supplied Holophane HMAO luminaires. At the time the Maine Department of Transportation said that the cost and weight of LED products had hampered the use of SSL in the application. Earlier, Cooper Lighting announced a high-mast project in Idaho.
Still, there are lighting professionals who think other light-source technologies may be most suitable for high-mast lighting. In an article on the 2012 Street and Area Lighting Conference over on our Illumination in Focus website, we covered a project at the Port of Oakland, California where Luxim LEP (light-emitting plasma) sources were determined the best match for a major retrofit of HPS fixtures.
